Bad day for Mayo clubs in FAI Junior Cup

Mayo participation in the FAI Junior Cup for 2021/2022 has come to an end today following Westport United and Ballyheane's elimination, the latter in controversial fashion.

Westport's United's run ended at the hands of an impressive performance by Peake Villa as the Tipperary-based side ran out 5-2 winners in United Park.

Ronan McGuire bagged a hat trick, with the other two goals coming from Pippy Carroll. United's goals were netted by Shane Nallen and Caoimhín O'Toole.

Ballyheane may feel they were done by the referee as they lost on penalties to Ballinasloe Town.

Gary Egan's penalty inside the opening minute put the hosts ahead but Ballyheane equalised shortly before half-time through Nathan Reilly Doyle.

Neither side were able to grab the winner in the remaining normal time and extra time and penalty shoot out would be needed to decide this contest.

With Ballyheane edging 7-6 in the shootout, Ballinasloe Town's Josh McCarthy missed his penalty for Ballyheane to win, but amongst the Super League champions celebrations, the referee ordered the penalty to be retaken after he judged Ballyheane goalkeeper Luca Meldrum to have come off his line.

McCarthy converted the retaken spot kick, Ballyheane’s Ryan Meldrum would see his penalty saved and Ballinasloe Town captain Des Hope then stepped up to send Ballinasloe Town through.
