Derelict buildings acquired in Mayo town centre for 16 new housing units

Mayo County Council has confirmed the purchase of a number ofderelict sites in Castlebar town centre for redevelopment as social housing units.

The properties were acquired at Ellison Street and Lower Charles Street.

Twelve new units will be constructed at Ellison Street and four at Lower Charles Street.

Councillor Blackie Gavin welcomed the council's approach as 'win win'.

"We are replacing eyesores with new homes for people who need them.

"What can be better than that?

"I would like to see much more of this approach taken in the years ahead as it will bring back life to the town centre and bring people closer to all the great amenities in Castlebar," he stated.
