Ireland's first all-female circus festival is happening in west Mayo

Move over muscle-men and big-chested lion-tamers, Daring Dames – Ireland’s first ever all-female circus festival - aims to put women circus artistes centre stage.

Over the weekend of March 5/6, knockabout clowns, astounding acrobats, family friendly performances, workshops, films, discussion and a spectacular Triple Goddess closing fire show will showcase the very best female circus talent from throughout Ireland.

Set in the beautiful surroundings of the historic Valley House on Achill Island, Daring Dames is entirely free to attend, supported by the Arts Council.

"It’s a turning point for circus in Ireland," says Festival Director Dea Birkett, who runs circus creation and touring company Circus250 and is herself a former circus performer.

"We’ve heard many tales of bravery and courage from male performers. But daring has many meanings, not all that have to involve muscle. We can be brave in different ways, and these women performers show that artistry, warmth and invention are as important as biceps. In many ways, this is the future of circus.’

Not that there won’t be feats of strength on show over the weekend. Included in those starring in the Saturday evening cabaret is Rock Hard Roxy, Ireland’s only strong woman.

"Roxy tears up telephone directories, snaps golf clubs as if they were matchsticks, and crushes apples in her biceps. Women can be strong, too," says Birkett.

Daring Dames weekend includes established shows like the award-winning family performance StrongWomen Science, alongside new and emerging work from exciting upcoming women circus artists who break the mould.
