Concern about steepness of bridge over new N5 in west Mayo
CONCERN has been expressed about the gradient of a bridge at Cogaula, Westport, which is part of the new N5 route that is currently under construction.
There is a 'significant' drop down to the old road, Councillor Peter Flynn told a local municipal district meeting, and he wondered what will happen at times of snow and frost.
There is concern locally about the elevation of the overpass and how it will operate during the winter, he told Marian McHugh of the National Roads Office, who gave a presentation to councillors on how the project is progressing in their area.
Councillor Flynn also asked how the bridge will work for pedestrians and if there is a walkway/cycleway on it, as it didn't look very wide.
Ms. McHugh said there will no pedestrian or cycle facility. There is a two-metre wide area, which is not segregated, where people can walk or cycle.
At times of frost or snow, it will be an area of responsibility for Mayo County Council to maintain.
With regards the steep incline, the overpass was designed to all required standards. The proper surface will be on it for a road of that gradient.
Councillor Flynn: So nothing to worry about.
Ms. McHugh: No.
