Disappointment at north Mayo sea wall repairs delay

WORKS on repairing the Bundoola sea wall in north Mayo are unlikely to be completed this year, much to the frustration of local councillors.

There is a delay in making precast concrete blocks off-site, which will then be installed at the wall site.

The news was greeted with dismay at a Westport-Belmullet Municipal District meeting by Councillors Sean Carey and Gerry Coyle who said they were led to believe the job would be finished this year.

Councillor Carey complained that the project is 'dragging on a few years now' and every effort has to be made to ensure it is completed in 2022. He couldn't see why it cannot be done.

Senior engineer Kieran Lynn said work is going on at design level and on fabrication of moulds.

Because of the nature of the industry and supply and demand it is anticipated that all may not be done this year.

Municipal district head Padraig Walsh said there are limitations in the pre-cast factory on the number of units that can be produced.

The council has not accepted the programme and are looking to get it accelerated.

Councillor Coyle said he didn't want a situation where they would be going looking for more money if it goes into next year and costs have gone up.

“They have their contract. Move on and build it.”
