Work underway on the project at Market Square, Castlebar.

Work begins on roofed outdoor dining hubs in busy Mayo town

Work on the installation of permanent outdoor dining hubs in Mayo's county town has got underway.

Building contractors have moved onto Market Square in Castlebar town centre to underway the project and the area is closed to pedestrians.

The development has been welcomed by local Councillor Ger Deere.

He explained: "These new hubs follow on from my motion some months ago to have outdoor dining benches installed at Market Square - and they proved to be an outstanding success.

"The current project is the provision of all-weather outdoor dining with a semi-permanent roof over a section of the square.

"It includes the installation of stretched fabric structure, tables, seating and the installation of dining pods for the purpose of promoting outdoor dining in the town.

"This will be of huge benefit to the many food outlets in the area and will enhance the new norm for the public of eating outdoors, in all weather conditions.

"Thanks is due to the businesses in the area who helped promoting this all summer."

Councillor Deere also praised the staff of the Castlebar Municipal District for submitting the application and securing the funding under the Fáilte Ireland's “Local Authority Weatherproofing and Outdoor Dining Infrastructure Scheme” project.
