RTÉ Investigates responds to Mayo criticism of 'Council Chamber Secrets' exposé

The editor of RTÉ Investigations Unit has written to Mayo County Council over criticism of its 'Council Chambers Secrets' programme which was broadcast on March 25 last and highlighted issues relating to the council.

Paul Maguire took exception to Councillor Al McDonnell describing the programme at a meeting of Castlebar Municipal District as 'tabloid, gutter journalism' - even though he admitted not watching the programme.

He also challenged the remarks by John Condon, director of service, Castlebar Municipal District, for stating the programme “did not tell the whole story” regarding the certification of the steel roof of Castlebar swimming pool.

In the letter seen by The Connaught Telegraph, Mr. Maguire stated: “RTÉ Investigates has a long history of exposing abuses perpetrated on the most vulnerable members of society.

“Arás Attracta, Co. Mayo; the Portlaoise baby death scandal; Ireland's illegal adoptions and the various créche investigations are just a small sample of the stories brought to light by the RTÉ Investigates Unit.

“In reporting on the issues regarding the certification of Castlebar swimming pool, RTÉ Investigates identified a concern regarding forged certificates submitted to Mayo County Council, which is the subject of a garda investigation.

“This is a matter which is clearly in the public interest.

“Mayo County Council, in its role as a building control authority, has clear duties under the Code of Practice for Inspecting and Certifying Buildings and Works and therefore there were several questions that had to be asked of the council in this regard.

“RTÉ Investigates wrote to Mayo County Council on two occasions asking for additional information on steps taken by the council after it was alerted to the fact that forged certificates had been submitted.

“The responses provided by Mayo County Council failed to provide clarification on several matters raised.

"However, I am satisfied that the essence of the response of Mayo County Council was fair and accurately reflected in the programme and reject entirely the assertion of Mr. Condon that the report did not tell “the whole story”.

“RTÉ stands over the content of the programme. It was well researched, fair, accurate and dealt with a topic which was clearly in the public interest.”

Mr. Maquire asked that his letter be read into the record of the next meeting of Mayo County Council.
