Funding for Mayo groups supporting mental health wellbeing

Mindspace Mayo is to receive €15,000 in funding for their ‘Schools Mental Health Promotion Programme’ while €6,000 has been allocated to the Mayo Mental Health Association for its educational programmes.

Speaking on the matter Mayo Senator Chambers said: “I am delighted to see the application for funding has been awarded to Mindspace Mayo for their ‘Schools Mental Health Promotion Programme.

"This money will make a real difference to young people in our county who are dealing with mental health issues.

"It is so important we support young people to mind their mental health and wellbeing.

“Mindspace Mayo is a free and confidential support for young people aged 12 to 25 who are experiencing mental health difficulties.

"It is a fantastic organisation and I am glad to see that their amazing work is being recognised.

"Members of Mayo Mental Health have been doing outstanding work for many years and it is great to see their efforts being acknowledged, too.

“I have been working closely with Minister Mary Butler since the end of last year to secure additional funding for mental services in Mayo.

“Mental Health supports are a necessity, and it is important that we continue to fund and support organisations like Mindspace Mayo and May Mental Health Association,” she concluded.

Welcoming the announcement, Deputy Alan Dillon said: "Mental health is probably the number one health issue for young people in Ireland today.

"The concerns and worries of young people around their mental health was compounded by the isolation and uncertainly brought forward by two unprecedented years of the Covid-19 Pandemic.

“This important funding announced today for school mental health education and promotional programs will help strengthen young peoples’ social and emotional coping skills and improve their overall mental health and wellbeing.

“It is so important government prioritise funding within Budget 2023 to support youth counselling services, key mental health interventions and the provision of a safe, respectful, supportive and positive environment in our secondary schools and higher education institutions.

“I want to acknowledge the excellent work by Mindspace Mayo and Mayo Mental Health Association who supports best practice in mental health promotion around the county.”
