River clean-up requests in south and east Mayo

CLEAN-UPS of the rivers in Charlestown and the Bowers in Ballinrobe have been requested.

The OPW have been contacted by Mayo County Council on the request of local councillors.

An inspection has taken place in Charlestown where a channel was found to be functioning and requires no maintenance. However, there is some debris upstream of the town bridge that needs to be removed, in consultation with the fisheries board.

Inland Fisheries Ireland have been in contact about the Bowers and a site meeting is being facilitated.

The river, said local Councillor Michael Burke, needs cleaning badly needed but it requires a lot of preparation between the agencies and to do it when water levels are low and spawning is not taking place
