Green Your Festival Mayo charter signed on Earth Day

MAYO people are proud - proud of their origins, loyal to home, and never lose their sense of place.

Home to Mayo aims to celebrate this pride and these connections with the diaspora all over the world.

As part of the celebrations, Home to Mayo offers Mayo people opportunities to learn how individuals, communities, businesses and the council are working to protect both our beautiful county and the wider world and invites diaspora to join in.

Taking place on April 30, Mayo Day - the first in a bumper series of Home to Mayo events taking place around the county during the month of May - is signing the Green Your Festival Charter.

This charter signifies an event's commitment to protecting the environment through measures such as providing segregated bins, requesting all stall holders follow good environmental practises and providing tips of how visitors can limit their impact on the environment.

Home to Mayo organisers are providing Green Your Festival info packs to all event organisers and encouraging all events to join and be green.

Climate action signage will also be erected throughout the county for visitors to see a snapshot of some of the many climate action initiatives that are happening throughout the county. A map of the climate action signage will be available on the Home to Mayo website.

On May 30, Mayo Change Makers will close out the month of events. This event, hosted by the Mary Robinson Centre, will spotlight the work of Mayo people around the world in climate action and protecting our planet and allow a forum for connecting and networking with like-minded Mayo people.

For bookings, go to http://www.maryrobinsoncentre.ie/mayo-changemakers.html.

Event organisers are aware of the carbon footprint involved in travelling back to the county for Home to Mayo and are linking with two Mayo connected carbon offset organisations: Vita is an Irish NGO partnering with communities in east Africa to develop sustainable futures, whose co-founder and current chair are both from Mayo, and Catch my Carbon who plant trees in Mayo. Both carbon offsets options are available on the Home to Mayo webpage.

Home to Mayo is proud of its green ambition and look forward to you joining them on their green journey.
