Decision to reject 65-house Mayo development upheld on appeal

A COUNCIL decision to reject proposals for a 65-house development in Castlebar has been upheld by An Bord Pleanála.

Comhair Developments Limited lodged an appeal after Mayo County Council ruled against their plans for lands at Carrowncurry, on the Pontoon Road in Castlebar.

Council planners felt the development, on an elevated, prominent site, would be obtrusive and was substandard in terms of design and layout and contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.

The appeals board agreed, saying the development would be visually obtrusive and would interfere with the character of the landscape.

They also felt it would constitute an inappropriate design response, resulting in an unattractive and inappropriate housing scheme, with unusable open space and lack of permeability.
