Mayo school wins national title at golf finals

The culmination of the schools golf season took place yesterday (Monday), with the Irish Schools National Finals taking place at Milltown GC in south Dublin.

There were four competitions down for decision, and Sacred Heart School, Westport, captured the Girls’ Junior Schools title.

The team of Sarah Corrigan, Mary Kate Lonergan and Mary Kate McHale won with 76 points, finishing two points ahead of Holy Child, Killiney (Sophie Hardy and Ellen Larkin), with Colaiste Eoin, Ennis (Aoife Cahill, Suzie Cusack and Lauren Fox) a point further behind.

In the Girls’ Senior Schools competition, St. Michael’s, Loreto Navan, were victorious. The team of Niamh Carroll and Chloe Maples Gaffney won on 48 points.

Rainey School, Magherafelt (Julia Currie, Olivia Currie and Poppy Hastings) finished a point behind, with Scoil Muire Gan Smal, Roscommon, finishing in third.

Ireland girls’ international and Scoil Muire Gan Smal student Olivia Costello won the individual prize on 30 points, one clear of Maples Gaffney.

Terenure College won the Boys Senior Schools title after a 3-2 win over Presentation College, Athenry. All five matches saw the 18th green, with two matches going to additional holes. Dylan Timbs defeated Darragh McCartin to win the decisive point.

Our Lady & St. Patrick's College, Knock, were crowned Boys Junior Schools national champions. The team of Rory Adamson, Charlie Collins and Ciaran O’Neill finished on 69 points.

The Belfast school finished one point clear of St. Brendan’s School, Killarney (Ronan Bennett and Luke McCan), with St. Joseph's Patrician College, Galway, and Presentation De La Salle, Bagnelstown, finishing three shots further back.
