Shadow of grief cast over Mayo town by Westmeath road tragedy

A shadow of grief has been cast over the town of Foxford following news of the death of a well-known local man in a two-vehicle collision on the N4 near Ballinalack, Co. Westmeath, yesterday evening.

Aged in his 70s, he was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to Mullingar Hospital and the local coroner notified.

His wife, who was also travelling in the car, is recovering from serious injuries at Tallaght Hospital, Dublin, after being airlifted from the crash scene.

Councillor Neil Cruise said the terrible news has stunned the local community.

The man who lost his life has not yet been named.

The driver of the other vehicle, a man in his 40s, was taken by ambulance to Mullingar Hospital. His injuries are not life threatening.

Garda forensic collision investigators have been at the scene.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision to come forward.

Those with camera footage from the N4 near Ballinalack at the time of the collision are asked to make it available to investigating gardaí.
