Two prestigious awards for Mayo media student

Kiltimagh's Valerie McHugh, a student of NUI, Galway, has scooped two titles at the National Student Media Awards.

She was feted for her journalism relating to road safety as well as securing the 'Radio Production of the Year - News & Current Affairs' accolade.

Valerie was nominated for more awards than any other student.

Newstalk’s Sean Moncrieff, who judged the Radio Production of the Year category, said Valerie’s production was “a powerful and highly informative piece of audio.”

Her production 'The Vent - Gender Based Violence' told stories of domestic violence, the need for more support from gardaí on the weekends, coercive control and other issues.

Moncrieff praised her as an interviewer stating: “Valerie did very well in giving the guests time to tell their stories.”
