€17.9m. for south/east Mayo roads

A ROAD works programme which will see a €17.9 million investment in south and east Mayo has been adopted by Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District.

The allocation has risen this year - it was €15.5m. in 2021.

Any programme that sees a €1.6m. increase is dramatic, said Councillor Damien Ryan at a district meeting, though he noted how some may be subsumed by rising costs.

Councillor John Cribbin said it was a 'huge investment' and he complimented all involved in compiling the programme.

It was the ambition of councillors and officials to improve the lives of people and they must crack on with the work, he said.

Some works have started, noted Councillor John Caulfield, who welcomed the funding.

The issue of rising costs was raised by Councillor Gerry Murray who wanted an assurance that the programme will be done this year.

Senior engineer Conrad Harley said the money they have is what they will have for the year. If costs increase, some lengths of road may have to be reduced.
