Demolition of landmark Achill house evokes debate

THE landscape entering Achill Island has changed in the past number of days.

The iconic Corrigan’s house - a landmark premises at Achill Sound bridge - has been demolished.

The building was in situ for over 100 years and many people have fond memories of visiting the premises over the years.

Mayo County Council has plans for public realm improvements at Achill Sound, which include traffic calming and the construction of a plaza and promenade.

Two years ago councillors approved plans for a new 10.6k greenway linking Achill Sound with Bunnacurry, including a 413-metre boardwalk and public realm improvements.

Many people shared their memories of visiting Corrigan’s when a photo of the demolition was shared on the What's on in Achill Facebook page. Below is a sample of some of those memories.

Laura Leonard: 'This is sad, Katie Kane was like a bonus grandmother to me. We'd go down into the basement to see what she was baking. I learned how to crab fish down behind the back of that house on the shore.'

Claire Maigheo: 'I peaked in the windows of that a few weeks ago and saw that all the floors had fallen through on it and was extremely dilapidated, so will be much better if made into a public amenity.'

Carmel McCarthy: 'I've got a cast iron frying pan that my mum bought in Sweeney's about 50 years ago.'

Rose Henry: 'Great memories of going into Katie for lovely ice cream and sweets.'
