Eyesores are bringing west Mayo town down

A WESTPORT councillor has highlighted a number of issues he feels are bringing the town down and are in the county council's remit to resolve.

Councillor Christy Hyland started on the Castlebar Street entrance where, on your left, the weeds will be 'growing out the windows' of the vacated courthouse. Turning left, you arrive at the former convent site, which is lowering standards in the town.

There were issues with graffiti on the greenway, and plastic signage was being put up by alcohol companies, some on protected buildings.

The playground in the town centre was locked, with fungus growing on it, he continued, and they were told there was no money to repair it.

The voluntary organisations, said Councillor Hyland, had brought Westport to where it is. A local family were investing millions, bringing people into town and opening up upgraded walkways.

The eyesores, he continued, were owned by the council and he and the people wanted to know what is going to be done.

He was speaking at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council.
