Mayo GAA fans having their say on winning display

Mayo GAA supporters have been expressing their views across social media on the county senior football squad's controversial victory over Monaghan in yesterday's All-Ireland SFC qualifiers.

The general view is that a win is a win - but much improvement is needed, particularly in the forward division, ahead of the next round.

Here is a selection of their fair and constructive opinions.

Paddy O'Boyle: "We mixed the good with the bad. Only two of our six forwards scored.

"Three of our defenders, plus the goalkeeper, scored five/six points from play.

"Five of our starting forwards were replaced in the second half.

"We should have been out of sight in that second half, some very poor wides and bad decision making.

"We have plenty to work on for the next game."

Richie O'Malley: "Lee Keegan is carrying this team for years and the backs were more of a scoring threat than the forwards.

"We will be gone after next round without major improvement, unfortunately."

John Geraghty: "We weren't too bad following a long lay off and with a reshuffled team playing against a dour side who parked the bus all day! We can only get better."

Dwayne Jordan: "It was a poor performance against an average team.

"Mayo could have easily lost it as won it. There really needs to be a massive improvement from this Mayo unit, including management!

Joe Duffy: "No one is getting carried away, it's a qualifier and you can only win it.

"They've been down this road before and they did what they had to do. Win it...move on...improve."

Tomas Mac An tSaoir: A win but that was not convincing.

"Monaghan were set up very defensively and hard to break down but, on many occasions, chances opened up only for players to shy away from taking their scores.

"Seemed to be a real lack of confidence at times.

"I understand that keeping the football is necessary at stages but when hitting a team on the break or countering, those chances need to be ceased while the momentum is with us, and before teams get all players behind the ball.

"Hopefully we can iron out these things before we meet the big boys in Dublin HQ."

John Daly: "Defence improved immensely since the Galway game. Forwards still messing around .

"We are still in it. Neutral venues next game. No reason why we can’t make it to the quarter finals."

* The draw for the second round of the qualifiers will be made on Monday morning and the game will be played at a neutral venue next weekend at a time and date to be confirmed.
