Elderly Mayo woman rescued from fire in her apartment

A woman in her seventies has been brought to safety after a fire broke out in her apartment at Connolly Street, Ballina.

The alarm was raised shortly before noon yesterday by a passer-by who observed heavy smoke coming from the building.

The local fire-fighting unit responded swiftly to the call-out and rescued the woman.

She was transferred to Mayo University Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation and she is expected to make a full recovery.
