Amy Mahon

Mayo teenager the hero for Sligo Rovers

Mayo teenager Amy Mahon was the hero between the posts for Sligo Rovers on Saturday at the Showgrounds when she saved a 93rd minute penalty to give the Bit O' Red a sensational 1-0 Women's National League victory against Wexford Youths.

It was one of a series of top class saves that the former Charlestown Athletic player produced in a thrilling encounter that the Wexford women had to win to stay in touch with leaders Shelbourne.

Sligo Rovers took a 67th minute lead against a Wexford side that has won for FAI Cup finals and four WNL titles since 2015.

It was a real backs-to-the-wall display that saw Mahon produce some spectacular saves, most notably from Ellen Molloy as the clock ticked into added time and that was followed by the penalty save from Kylie Murphy.

Wexford arrived at the Showgrounds in a confident mood after already recording a 2-0 win against Sligo in April at Ferrycarrig Park and had travelled on Friday night for the midday kick-off.

Mahon took over the number one position between the posts after first choice 'keeper Kristen Sample sustained a broken arm against Galway at the beginning of May and since then has made a big impact.

Saturday's victory was Sligo's third successive outing unbeaten and third successive clean sheet and Mahon's contribution has been crucial.

She joined the senior Sligo Rovers panel this season after previously playing with the Under 17 team in 2020 before that season was halted due to Covid-19. After starting with Charlestown Athletic, she signed for Castlebar Celtic and last season played with Galway Under 17s.

She also played for Connacht in the inter-provincial series winning a medal in 2017 and was capped for Ireland in the Bob Docherty Cup in 2019.

"Amy produced a great save to keep it at 1-0, she has been excellent since she came in for Kristen and apart from the penalty, she made some excellent saves for us," stated Sligo Rovers manager Steve Feeney.
