Passing of retired Mayo teacher Sean Kerins is widely mourned

The death has occurred of Sean (John) Kerins, Westport Road, Castlebar, a former member of the teaching staff of St. Gerald's College in the town.

He died peacefully at home yesterday in the loving care of his family.

An outstanding teacher in the fields of economics, business studies and maths., the deceased was also widely known for his work as a videographer.

Predeceased by his parents Jack and Kathleen, he is survived by his wife Marie, son Fergal, daughters Rachel and Ruth, daughter-in-law Danielle, sons-in-law Karl and Dan, granddaughters Ceoladh and Caoimhe, sisters Noelle and Mary, brothers Gerard and Francis, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, extended Flannery family, colleagues and friends, to whom deepest sympathy is tendered.

In a tribute, Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club stated: "It is with deep sadness that the members of Castlebar Mitchels GAA Club learned of the death of Sean Kerins.

"Sean was a great friend of the Mitchels who over the years carrying out many interviews and video work for the club.

"Sean was a brilliant teacher who taught many of our players and club officers in St. Gerald's.

"We extend deepest sympathies to his wife Marie and family. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

A tribute by St. Gerald's College said: "Sean was a teacher held in the highest regard by both staff and students alike.

"One who cared deeply for his students and gave a great amount of his own time, working with them and encouraging them to reach their full potential.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife Marie, children Fergal, Rachael and Ruth."

His remains will be reposing at his home on the Westport Road (F23 XT25) on Tuesday evening from 4 to 7 p.m.

Removal on Wednesday morning at 11.30 a.m. for Funeral Mass at 12 noon in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar.

Sean will be laid to rest afterwards in the New Cemetery, Castlebar.
