Eventful day for Mayo on day two of Gaynor Cup

MAYO had an eventful second day at the Gaynor Cup in UL today.

Facing number 1 seeds MGL North at midday in the early streamed match the girls gave an excellent early account of themselves, culminating in Emma Higgins being brought down by the Dublin 'keeper on the edge of the box in the ninth minute. She escaped with a yellow card when another ref may well have shown red.

To rub salt into the wound, MGL scored from a corner in the 15th minute. Mayo competed well but conceded two more second-half goals to give MGL a rather flattering 3-0 win.

Back on the pitch at 6 p.m., Kilkenny provided the opposition.

Playing against a near gale in the first half, Mayo managed the conditions really well and went in at the break a goal up through Emma Higgins.

The second half saw Mayo dominate without adding the important second goal and the Noresiders tied the game up seven minutes from time with a breakaway goal.

Despite the tired bodies, Mayo rallied again and centre-back Aine Monaghan got a perfect header on yet another fantastic Amy Murphy set-piece to seal the win.

Best for Mayo over the two games today were Cara Culkin, Amy Doherty, Aine Monaghan, Aoife Meaney, Kasey Ruane, Emma Higgins, Roise Burke and Ursula Shaugnessy.
