TD calls for south Mayo to be brought back to county's constituency

A Mayo TD has stated that when the results of the recent census are established there will be a review of the constituencies all over Ireland.

Deputy Michael Ring has called for south Mayo to be brought back into the Mayo constituency.

He stated: “There is going to be a review of the constituencies in Ireland once the Census results are known.

"It was very wrong that the people of south Mayo were put in to the West Galway constituency.

"The people of south Mayo have no connection with this area.

"They feel disenfranchised from the political sphere. They want to be in the Mayo constituency

“When I first entered the Dáil, Mayo was a six-seater; it was two three-seaters.

"It was subsequently reduced to a five-seater and it is now a four-seater.

"The Census figures will justify Mayo’s need for a fifth seat. Even if the fifth seat is not approved south Mayo should be brought back in to Mayo.

“It is wrong that areas are joined up with other areas without taking in to account the situation on the ground.

"People have an entitlement to be represented properly.

"They need to know their public representatives and have access to them," he added.
