Councillor Michael Kilcoyne.

New Castlebar cathaoirleach has great experience in role

Independent Councillor Michael Kilcoyne has been elected cathaoirleach of Castlebar Municipal District for the fourth time in nine years.

He was installed in the position at today's annual general meeting, succeeding Councillor Martin McLoughlin (FF) in the role.

Councillor Al McDonnell (FF) had been scheduled to take the appointment but chose to postpone it for one year.

He confirmed afterwards he will be seeking the position next June.

Councillor Blackie Gavin (FF) was installed as leas-cathaoirleach.

Neither of the positions were contested.

In his address, Councillor Kilcoyne said tackling the need for social housing will be his top priority for the coming year.

Warm tributes were paid to outgoing cathaoirleach, Councillor McLoughlin, for his fairness and courtesy.
