‘Eyesore’ property in Claremorris town to be redeveloped for retail and homes
AN 'eyesore' property in the centre of Claremorris town is to be redeveloped.
The premises, on Dalton Street, has been vacant for two decades and plans to give it a new lease of life were welcomed by local Councillor Richard Finn.
Planning has been granted to redevelop the premises to consist of two ground floor retail units, two first floor apartments and two second floor apartments.
The applicant in the case is Michael O'Boyle.
Councillor Finn, in a submission to Mayo County Council, highlighted how the property is a 'high profile building' - the first to hit you on the eye as you come from the Ballyhaunis Road.
It has been derelict for 20 years or more and was an 'eyesore' on the main street.
It was, he commented, fortunate that someone like Mr. O'Boyle had come to purchase it and take a chance on it, so as to take the dereliction away.
The continued dereliction of the property was affecting the visual aesthetic of the streetscape and as it wasn't on the record of protected structures, its redevelopment should be order.
The property, he noted, has been on sale for 12 years or more and there was now an opportunity to have it restored.
