Green light for north Mayo glamping pods

PLANS for a glamping development in north Mayo have received the thumbs up from council planners.

The project comprises six self-contained glamping pods.

They will be located at Corclough West in Belmullet. The site is opposite Lavelle's Eagle Bar.

A planner's report noted that the siting of the pods, while remote in nature (which adds to the visitor experience), was close to a settlement with low order services, with particular reference to Lavelle's pub and shop.

It noted that for farmers and rural dwellers, glamping pods/self-catering accommodation is an opportunity for enterprise diversification.

Approval of such enterprise should be subject to compliance with standard planning considerations, such as technical and environmental considerations and compliance with the county development plan in general.

It is a condition of the grant of planning that the unit will not operate in the absence of Bord Fáilte's 'Welcome Standard' targeted at innovative, quirky or unusual tourist accommodation businesses such as glamping, pods and log cabins. The standard aims to ensure a high end quality visitor experience for tourists.
