Board hopes to have new Mayo manager in place ahead of club championship

The new Mayo senior football manager could be in place before the start of the Mayo senior football championship, writes John Melvin.

Delegates at last night's meeting of the Mayo GAA County Board urged that that the man (or woman) who is to take over the reins from James Horan should be fully appraised of what talent might be available to him by being appointed before the start of the Mayo senior club football championship, which is due to begin in early September.

Mayo GAA chairman Seamus Tuohy said that is something the board would be favour of, but he cautioned that there are a lot of processes to be gone through and it is coming into the month of August.

The chairman reminded delegates at the meeting that it was important for confidentiality to be maintained at all levels in relation to the applicants for the job.

He said: “Most people are aware of first stage of process, which is to process the applications from those who have expressed an interest in the position.”

He added: “What I would ask from all clubs and delegates is that they respect the confidentiality of the process and the confidentiality of the applicants, which is vital if we are to get the right person for the job.”

County secretary Dermot Butler said he had received a number of applications by email and they will be sent an application from, although there was one that applicant who will not be sent a form - a clear reference to an overseas applicant from an individual who has been a regular critic of the Mayo GAA County Board on various social media platforms.
