TYNAN'S TAKE

AND then there were two. It looks to be a straight shootout between Ballina Town and defending champions Ballyheane to see who will be crowned Elverys Sports Super League champions for 2022.

The other two challengers, Castlebar Celtic and Kiltimagh Knock United, have been left behind following a bad weekend for both. After defeat to old rivals Westport United last Thursday evening, Celtic were then beaten by Ballyheane on a miserable morning in Pat Quigley Park. Coupled with games in hand, Stevie Gavin's side was always playing catch up and needed near perfection to stay in the hunt.

It looks also as if Kiltimagh Knock's momentum has come to a halt following defeat to Ballina Town at CMS Park last Sunday. If you told anyone that they would be sitting third with five games remaining at the start of the season, few, if any, would believe it and as mentioned in this column previously, they may be the story of the Super League season when all is said and done.

The Town have enjoyed a resurgence in recent weeks after a poor start to the season. They have been building momentum quietly and coupled with their recent Westaro Cup final triumph, everything is going their way.

But if any team appear capable of stopping them, it's Ballyheane. There is a real assuredness and self-belief flowing through Ashley Stevenson's charges.

On multiple occasions this season, they have fallen behind but there is always the belief they will find a way. They did so against Manulla recently and they did it once more against Celtic after conceding very early on.

The top two meet again in just under two weeks’ time in Belleek. It has all the makings of a Super League classic.
