Overwhelmed Mayo rescue charity forced to stop accepting cats

AN animal rescue charity in Mayo has had to close its doors to cats for at least a month as its resources are stretched to capacity.

Ballina-based North West SPCA announced the decision 'with a heavy heart' on its Facebook page last night.

The volunteer-led group explained: “We are overwhelmed, full to capacity, lacking in foster spaces, homes, volunteers, money and resources.

“We cannot continue to take in creatures when we haven't got the money to pay the already existing pet bills.

“We are devastated to be at this point but we have no choice. So at this stage we cannot accept more cats for at least a month whilst we try to pay bills, re-home foster cats, get others neutered and tend to our TNR waiting list.”

Their advice for anyone needing assistance with cats is to try other rescues in your county and nearby counties and where possible just mind any cats or kittens you come across until you can get help. Keep them safe and secure, warm and fed.

The post continued: “Remember we do not have a shelter for animals, we are all volunteers and we do our best always.

“If you would like to contribute towards our vet bills and costs please do so at www.paypal.me/nwspca.

“If you can help us by rehoming or fostering a cat please message us. If you would like to volunteer, please get in touch and leave a phone number.

“Thanks so much everyone and remember that these animals are blameless in it all, so please be kind to them.”
