Castlebar Golf Club celebrate two provincial final victories

Members of Castlebar Golf Club are celebrating the winning of two provincial titles. . .the Pierce Purcell Shield and the Women's Junior Cup.

Both teams were successful in their Connacht finals held at Athlone Golf Club.

The women's team, captained by Breda Mulroy, defeated Athenry 4-1 on Saturday.

Sarah Prendergast beat Nicola Burke 2 and 1; Leah Kerr overcame Pat Jaconsen 5 and 4 and Shiela Baynes defeated Emer Beatty 4 and three while Carmel Moran and Evelyn Brady halved with Nicola Nally and Marie Carr, respectively.

Then, 24 hours later, the men's Pierce Purcell team, captained by Shane Rice, overcame Gort by three and a half to one and a half.

Stephen Munnelly and Declan Prendergast beat Noel Shaughnessy and David Cahill 4 and 3; Billy Evens and Ray Prendergast put paid to the challenge of P.J. Allen and Gerry Broderick by one hole, Tommy Lawless and Colin Dawson defeated Brendan McDonagh and Gerard Connor 2 and 1.

John Gilligan and Johan Collins halved with John Moylan and Gerry Lally with Tom Moylette and Sean Haugh going under to Pat Curtis and John Williams 3 and 2.

Both teams have now qualified for the All-Ireland finals at Knightbrook Golf Club, Trim, Co. Meath, in mid-September.
