Mayo Division 1 Cup title secured by Castlebar Mitchels

The Mayo GAA senior league Division 1 Cup final was seconds away from penalties but Paddy Durcan landed a late winner for Castlebar Mitchels, who saw off Knockmore by the bare minimum – 1-14 to 1-13 – at James Stephens Park, Ballina, this afternoon.

In a game of twists and turns, Mitchels produced a storming first half to lead by seven at the break, 1-8 to 0-4, but Knockmore delivered a second half befitting of county champions to bring the game to extra time.

The men from north Mayo scored the only point of the first period of extra time but it was the youthful Mitchels who finished strong, with that late winner from Durcan settling the contest in Castlebar's favour.

It bodes well for a good run in the championship as Mitchels would appear to have blended youth and experience to telling effect, while on the evidence of today, Knockmore won't be too far away either and could well make it three in a row.

Elsewhere, Davitts proved a tad too strong for an injury-hit Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin side to win the Division 2 Cup, Bonniconlon got the better of north Mayo rivals Killala to claim the Division 3 Cup, and Charlestown B took the Division 4 Cup with victory over Breaffy B.

On Friday evening, Westport C won the Division 5 Cup couresy of their win over near neighbours Kilmeena B, while yesterday afternoon, Ballintubber withstood a Louisburgh comeback in Clogher to hold on to their Division 1 status.
