Passing of widely popular Castlebar man in England

The deceased worked in the licensed trade in England for many years

The death has taken place in Hatfield Heath, Essex, England, of Niall Garavan, formerly of Milebush, Castlebar.

A son of Toni and the late Charlie Garavan, Sarnaught, Castlebar, the news of his passing, following a short illness, has evoked a huge sense of loss in his home town where he played rugby in his youth.

In his late 50s, the deceased worked in the licensed trade in England for many years.

He was manager of The Oxford Arms, Camden High Street, London, from 1989 to 1994, a premises that was very popular with members of the Irish community, his regular customers included members of The Pogues and broadcaster Henry Kelly.

Niall also ran Seamus O’Donnells, Hertford; O’Connors, Chelmsford; and The Stag in Hatfield Heath.

He was involved in the trade in Ireland for a number of years, having public houses in Castletownbere, Co. Cork, and Ballaghaderreen, Co. Roscommon, in the mid-1990s.

Always maintaining a close connection with his family and friends in Castlebar, he was an endearing and much loved personality who retained a great passion for the sport of rugby throughout his life.

Many warm tributes have been paid to him on social media since his death was announced.

Brother of Karl and Steve, he is also survived by his loving partner Gwen, daughters Clodagh and Sorcha, granddaughter Bethany, son-in-law George, Sorcha’s partner Josh, extended family, relatives and many friends.

Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved family on their loss.

Niall’s funeral service will take place on Tuesday, September 20, at 12.30 p.m. in Parndon Wood Crematorium, Harlow, CM19 4SF, UK.

A service of remembrance will take place at a later date in Castlebar.
