Mayo senior championship contenders all off to a winning start

Castlebar Mitchels pushed all the way by Charlestown

The second day of the opening weekend of the Mayo club championship saw a mixture of one-sided affairs and thrilling close encounters.

In the senior championship, Ballintubber gave last year's intermediate champions Mayo Gaels a lession in Group 1 with a convincing 1-16 to 0-7 win at Ray Prendergast Park while reigning champions Knockmore got their three-in-a-row quest off to the best start with a 3-8 to 0-11 victory over Aghamore.

Group 3 saw an early contender for game of the championship as Balla and Belmullet, with Belmullet coming back from four points down at half time to win by a point, 3-8 to 2-10. The other game in Group 3 was a more one-sided affair as Breaffy beat Claremorris 1-16 to 0-11

After leading by a point at the interval, 0-6 to 0-5, the north Mayo side looked to have the game in the bag when going three points clear a minute into injury time.

The final game in the senior championship between Castlebar Mitchels and Charlestown saw Mitchels withstand a tremendous comeback from Charlestown to win by a single point, 0-11 to 0-10.

In the intermediate championship, Louisburgh stated their title credentials in beating Crossmolina 2-10 to 0-10 in Group 1 while in Group 2, Ballinrobe narrowly defeated Parke Keelogues Crimlin 2-12 to 1-14

In the Mayo junior championship, there were narrow wins for Ballycastle over Mowgownagh (2-10 to 1-12) in Group 1, Ardagh over Ballycroy (0-13 to 1-9) in Group 2 and Tuar Mhic Éadaigh over Achill (1-12 to 1-10). The other junior championship game was in Group 4, Shrule/Glencorrib beating Lacken 3-13 to 0-4
