Safety and access issues at south Mayo swimming spot
SAFETY and access issues at Cahir Pier, on Lough Mask, were highlighted at a Claremorris/Swinford Municipal District meeting this week.
Local Ballinrobe Councillor Michael Burke said it is in a dangerous state of repair, with old stones cobbled together back in the '60s.
Hundreds of swimmers use the facility every day during the summer, but the access is in a very poor state, and it is particularly difficult for people with a disability, he said.
The pier seems to be falling between the cracks for funding as it is an inland pier and he asked Mayo County Council to find a way to invest some money in it and make it more comfortable for users.
His colleague Councillor Patsy O'Brien agreed it is in a 'terrible' state and has been totally neglected. He admitted to being astonished when he saw the condition it is in.
After the meeting, on his social media, Councillor O'Brien said he has been working with the director of services and municipal manager in relation to accessing funding for Cahir Pier.
The area was inspected by council officials who agree there are safety issues, especially proper disability access, and they have been looking at all options in relation to immediate state funding.
“Hopefully, we will be successful. However, if not Mayo County Council have given a commitment that they will look at the project positively through the allocation of GMA funding for 2023,” he added.
