Gardaí investigating Mayo railway line tragedy

Gardaí in Mayo are investigating an incident in which a 31-year-old man lost his life on the railway line at Knockaphunta, Castlebar, earlier today.

The man, who is understood to have been holidaying in the area from Holland, was struck by a train en route to Heuston Station, Dublin, from Westport before 8 a.m. this morning.

News of the incident cast of cloud of immense sadness over the community.

His body was removed by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital where a post-mortem will take place.

A garda technical team has also examined the scene of the tragedy.

The railway line has since reopened after train services between Westport and Castlebar were suspended for a number of hours.
