Big step by Castlebar in pursuit of national golf title

Castlebar Golf Club has reached the semi-final of the AIG Pierce Purcell Shield.

The team, captained by Shane Rice, defeated Clontarf 4-1 in their quarterfinal match at Knightsbrook Golf Club, Trim, Co. Meath, today.

They got off to a flying start when Tommy Lawless and Colin Dawson defeated Eamon Ryan and Thomas Blake 6 & 5.

Paddy Burke and Sean Haugh extended the lead by overcoming Noel Hickey and Christopher Stafford 3 & 2.

Victory was sealed when Billy Evan and Ray Prendergast defeated John Delaney and Sean Malone 4 & 3.

The other two matches were halved, giving Castlebar a 4-1 win.

John Gilligan and Johan Collins shared the spoils with Niall Glackin and David Corcoran while Tommy Moylette and Declan Prendergast halved with J.P. Auguste and David Brennan.

Castlebar will face Lismore of Waterford in tomorrow's semi-final, starting at 9 a.m.

Lismore defeated Lisburn by 3-2 in their last-eight encounter today.

The Castlebar Golf Club Women's Junior Cup team will also be in action at Knightsbrook Golf Club tomorrow.

They face Royal Tara in their quarterfinal match at 12 noon.
