Impressive Castlebar storm into national golf decider

Castlebar Golf Club has stormed into the final of the Pierce Purcell Shield at Knighsbrook Golf Club, Trim, Co. Meath.

They defeated Lismore, Co. Waterford, in this morning's semi-final clash in emphatic style.

Billy Evans and Ray Prendergast set the tone of the 4-1 victory by overpowering Paddy O'Leary and Donal J. O'Leary 7 & 6.

Then Tommy Lawless and Colin Dawson put paid to the challenge of Pat Morrissey and Patrick Curley to make it 2-0 for the Connaught champions.

The win was sealed by Senator Paddy Burke and Sean Haugh with a 2 & 1 win over William P. Curley and Martin O'Driscoll.

Tommy Moylette and Declan Prendergast were on course to defeating Shane O'Rourke and Luke O'Rourke when called in.

Seamus Granahan and Johnan Collins were also called in. They, too, were in command against Martin Power and Ger Mulcahy.

An excellent display by Castlebar who will now face Leinster champions Abbeyleix in tomorrow's final. Abbeyleix defeated Mayobridge by 3-2 in their penultimate round clash today.

It's been a day of double joy for the club as the Castlebar women's team of Sarah Prendergast, Lorna Irwin, Breege Finnerty, Sheila Baynes and Carmel Moran have advanced to the semi-final of the GUI Women's Junior Cup following a pulsating 3-2 win over Royal Tara.

With the teams level at 2-2, following brilliant wins by Castlebar's Sarah Prendergast and Sheila Baynes, Carmel Moran clinched victory with a 3 & 2 victory over Angela Reilly.
