Ballyheane remain the kings of the Mayo Football League

TYNAN'S TAKE

IT is always said that the sign of a great team is not just winning a league title, but retaining it. That is exactly what Ballyheane have done as they comprehensively beat Westport United in Pat Quigley Park to be crowned Mayo Super League champions for the second year in a row.

I’ll hold my hands up and admit I didn’t think it would happen. Not because they didn’t have the ability to do so, but I felt the non-stop schedule of last season would eventually catch up with them. With postponements in last season’s cup finals as well as involvement in the Connaught Cup and FAI Junior Cup, this Ballyheane side have not had an extended break for almost two years and it is a testament to Ashley Stevenson and his management team that they have kept this side energised throughout a challenging defence of their title.

Losses to Manulla and Kiltimagh/Knock United in the first half of the season left many observers wondering (including this one) that maybe the juice was running low but the month of July showed why they were going to retain the title.

Their comeback win over Manulla, the way they dug out a victory over Glenhest Rovers and their high scoring encounter with Castlebar Celtic. In these three matches, they displayed not just the quality, but the character, intensity, and battling qualities needed to go all the way once more.

The only thing missing from this side is a Mayo Super Cup title, and that competition begins next month. Would you bet against them?
