New bridge should be catalyst for N26 route upgrade

THE opening of the new Cloongullane bridge will hopefully be the catalyst for a full upgrade of the N26 between Swinford and Ballina.

The view was expressed by Independent Councillor Mark Duffy who described the new bridge as a 'brilliant piece of infrastructure for the county'.

Speaking at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council, he said he hoped it would be the catalyst for a full upgrade, a point agreed by Councillor John O'Hara who said works were needed between Foxford and Mount Falcon and at Callow.

Councillor Michael Smyth said the new road alignment would have a significant impact for road use for decades to come.

A report was before them on speed limits as part of the project, which will improve road safety.

Councillor Smyth added that a job of work remained to be done in relation to the section from Toomore crossroads to Callow, where measures are needed.

The new Cloongullane bridge will be officially opened on October 13.
