Mayo siblings' shave or dye fundraiser for cancer charity

THREE siblings of a young cancer patient are raising money for a charity which has assisted their family through a traumatic few months.

Joseph, Ciara and Sarah Walsh from Robeen, Hollymount, have taken the brave step of shaving or dying their hair to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society. They will be joined by their friends Molly Ager from Kilmaine along with Jack, Amy, Lisa and Conor Geraghty, Robeen.

Just last June, Sinéad Walsh, age 13, a student of Ballinrobe Community School, was diagnosed with leukaemia. Over the following months, the family, that include Sinéad’s parents, Brendan and Margaret, and her two sisters and brother, rallied around her and gave her all the comfort and support she needed during what was an extremely difficult and traumatic time.

Since then Sinéad has had chemotherapy and immunotherapy, the signs for which have shown a great improvement in her condition and the signs for the future are positive.

Having seen the work and support that the Irish Cancer Society have given to the Walsh family over the past number of months, Joseph, Ciara and Sarah gathered together their friends and have decided to shave or dye their hair to raise vital funds for the charity.

They said: “Colours are still be decided but we will be sure to show the end result. There are bound to be some interesting hair colours with nine of us dying our hair and two shaving their heads!”

As of Monday evening, the group have already raised just over €6,000.

Sinead’s parents would like to thank their local doctors in Hollymount, the various medical teams in Crumlin Children’s Hospital and their local community and friends who have given them so much help and support over the last few months.
