Completion of west Mayo flood relief scheme welcomed

THE completion of the Carrowholly flood relief scheme in Westport has been welcomed by Deputy Michael Ring.

Work on another local flood alleviation scheme is taking place, at Cois Abhainn and Ashwood in Westport, with Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan due to attend at the site this week.

Said Deputy Ring in welcoming the completion of the Carrowholly works: “In 2018, I was pleased to announce that €358,787 had been allocated by the government to Mayo County Council for flood mitigation works and a coastal protection scheme at Carrowholly. This news gave assurances to the local community.

“Carrowholly had experienced significant flood damage in the past and I believe these works will be bring an end to that situation.

“I would also like to commend the former Minister of State for the Office of Public Works Kevin Boxer Moran for allocating the funding.

“In June 2022, a further €126,000 was allocated to the council for the addition of embankments to the existing flood defences and associated works. I would like to compliment Minister of State Patrick O’Donovan for this funding.

“This additional funding enabled the works in Carrowholly to be completed and I am delighted that this has been done.”

Added Deputy Ring: “I understand that Minister of State O’Donovan will attend the commencement of the flood relief scheme at Cois Abhainn and Ashwood, Westport, on this Thursday following the recent announcement of the appointment of contractors for the scheme.

“Thirty-six homes in the two residential estates are at risk of flooding and will be protected once these works have been carried out.”
