New Bowers Way walk in south Mayo is open

THE new Bowers Way in south Mayo, linking Ballinrobe with Lough Mask, is now open.

The 'fantastic' news was welcomed by local Councillor Patsy O'Brien.

Writing on his social media, he explained how the project will allow people to walk from Ballinrobe to Lough Mask on a riverside trail that meanders under tree canopies and through beautiful grassland habitats.

The route is six kilometres long. It was funded under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme and is a great asset for the area.

The trail utilises the existing Bowers Towpath, a short section on-road, a dedicated path alongside the Robe river and a woodland section through Coillte grounds.

Added Councillor O'Brien: “This project would not have been possible only for the generosity of the Cawe family and Coillte for allowing permissive access through their lands.”

The trail can be accessed from Knocknakillew, where a new trailhead has been developed.

Councillor Michael Burke, on his socials, said Ballinrobe is already a great town to walk in, 'and it just got better'.

Lots of locals and visitors have been out experiencing it in recent days and the feedback is that they have really enjoyed it.

“This is a super addition to our area,” said Councillor Burke.
