Mayo welcome for increased access to free GP care

A Mayo Oireachtas member has welcomed a major increase in access to free GP care for many people as part of a significant step towards Universal Healthcare in Budget 2023.

Senator Lisa Chambers commented: “This is a significant measure in helping more people access free GP care.

"Up to now many people have had to pay for GP access. As part of this budget approximately 430,000 people will be eligible for the card with all those up to the median income - which is on average €46,000 - being eligible.

“At a time when families are under enormous cost of living pressures, the government is focusing on delivering societal benefits and where public expenditure can replace the private costs currently being faced by individuals.

“This move will provide free GP access to at least half of all Irish households.

“There was also significant announcements made in the area of women’s health, an area I have campaigned tirelessly on, including the free contraception scheme has been extended to all women aged 16 to 30 years old; delivery for the first time in Ireland a publicly funded IVF system; and the cost Cariban, which treats Hyperemisis, is to be reimbursed and there will be zero vat on HRT and period products,” she stated

“Another welcome change announced in the Budget is the abolishment of hospital inpatient charges which will save some patients up to €800 a year,” she added.
