Reason Mayo businesses are 'shocked' over new rates bills revealed

The reason why Mayo business owners are shocked over their new rates bills has been revealed.

Elected representatives in the county have told how their telephones are 'hopping' as they are inundated with calls by angry shop owners complaining over the figures quoted in correspondence.

The Valuations Office is currently issuing revised valuations to businesses across county.

Councillor Cyril Burke said it is important for ratepayers to read the small print before discovering what exactly is due to be paid.

The amount quoted in the bill needs to be multiplied by 0.239.

So, in effect, a bill showing a figure of €20,000 is actually for a sum of €4,730 under the new valuations.

John Condon, director of services, Mayo County Council, said the change is cost neutral for most ratepayers.

Ratepayers unhappy with their bills are urged to attend the following walk-in clinics scheduled to take place.
