Garda crackdown demanded on Mayo boy-racers as 'hot spots' revealed

A garda crackdown on boy-racers is being sought by an elected member of Mayo County Council.

Councillor Martin McLoughlin cited two ‘hot spots’ close to Castlebar which the force needed to focus on.

He named them as Derrinumera, on the main Castlebar to Newport Road, and Buckadoon crossroads on the R312 leading to Belmullet.

He hit out: “It’s time we started using infra-red cameras to detect whose responsible and get them off the road once and for all.

“They are a threat to public safety and noise they are making at weekends, in particular, is keeping decent people awake until all hours of the night.

"They come from all over the province and it's mayhem at times.

“It’s grossly unfair and anti-social and the matter has to be tackled head-on by our authorities.”

John Condon, director of services, said an imminent change in legislation regarding the use of cameras for detection will be a game-changer in that regard.
