Man goes on trial this week over murder of Mayo detective

A 46-year-old Mayo man will go on trial later this week charged with the murder of Detective Garda Colm Horkan in Castlerea in June 2020, RTÉ News has confirmed.

Stephen Silver, Foxford, pleaded not guilty to the murder of a garda acting in the course of his duty.

But he has pleaded guilty to manslaughter by virtue of diminished responsibility when the charge was put to him at the Central Criminal Court earlier today.

A jury is being sworn in to try the case which is expected to start on Friday and last up to seven weeks.

More than 100 witnesses could be called to give evidence, the RTÉ report added.
