Approval for multi-million-euro investment in Mayo college

A multi-million-euro investment in Davitt College in Castlebar has received initial project approval from the Department of Education today.

Welcoming the news Senator Lisa Chambers said "This is a hugely significant development at Davitt College which is an ever growing and expanding secondary school in Castlebar.

"Initial project approval has been granted by the department of education for sixteen general classrooms, four SET rooms, a multi-media room, three science labs, two science prep rooms, an art room, a graphics room, a music room, and other additional upgrades to existing buildings.

"The scale of the new buildings provided for is colossal and represents one of the biggest projects approved in the county in years.

"The level of investment is in the millions and until the project goes to tender we won't know the full amount but it is certainly in excess of €10 million.

"The next stage now is to proceed to tender and get the project built."

"Under this government we have seen unprecedented levels of investment in education.

"The recent budget announcement of free school books for all primary school children will be transformative for primary education and shows that education is a top priority for government."

Welcoming the announcement, Deputy Alan Dillon stated: “As former pupil and teacher of Davitt College, I welcome the news that Initial project approval has been granted by the department of education for sixteen general classrooms, four SET rooms, a multi-media room, three science labs, two science prep rooms, an art room, a graphics room, a music room, and other additional upgrades to existing buildings.

“This is significant investment in secondary education for Castlebar and I congratulate principal Conor Reilly, the board of management, staff at MSLETB for their hard work in progressing this project. I look forward to working in the coming months to ensure there is no delays."
