Junior hurling titles secured by Westport and Claremorris

Westport and Claremorris are today basking in the glory of county hurling success at Mayo Junior A and Junior B level respectively.

First up at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park yesterday were Claremorris and Caiseal Gaels battling it out for the Ciaran Byrne Cup, with the south Mayo men recording a 0-17 to 1-10 victory following a pulsating contest in which they trailed by a point at the break (0-8 to 0-9).

Claremorris held their opponents to just 1-1 in the second half while adding nine points of their own.

The Junior A final featured last year's winners, Tooreen B, and Westport, who operated at senior level last year.

A whirlwind start had Westport 1-2 to no score up after just eight minutes and by half-time they were still well in command, leading 2-5 to 0-4.

Westport struggled in front of the posts in the second half, adding just two more points, and that allowed Tooreen to eat into the deficit.

Tooreen's six second-half points had them just three behind in injury time but they never managed to create the goal chance they needed after that to draw level, and Westport ran out deserving winners by 2-7 to 0-10, winning the Tom Earley Cup for their efforts.

The senior final between Ballyhaunis and Tooreen A will be played this afternoon at 2 p.m. in Adrian Freeman Park, Tooreen.
