Call for resolution to N5 road work concerns by Mayo community
A Mayo elected representative has called on the contractors involved in the construction of the new N5 to engage with residents in Islandeady who have raised serious concerns in relation to the project.
Councillor Deere has also asked that the roads design team at Mayo County Council to meet with the residents after it emerged that the original stone wall, located on both sides of the L1811 which leads of the N5 and into Islandeady community, is to be replaced with post and rail wire fencing.
He stated: “Members of the local community enhancement committee have expressed concerns that the road leading to their local church, their fantastic GAA facilities as well as their Community Centre will now have a wire railing instead of the original stone wall.
"They community also have plans submitted for a state-of-the-art community facility which they hope to progress shortly,” said Cllr Deere, who added the community are ‘enraged’ at this downgrade following the intrusion and imposition construction works on the N5 have had in their beautiful village.
Councillor Deere said the second issue raised by the community is the height of the newly constructed land mass or oil storage area which is on the Westport side of the village.
He said this has far exceeded the original plans that were agreed prior to construction.
“The community representatives have stated this ‘monstrosity’ has obscured and destroyed the view into their village from the existing N5.
"It was initially believed the structure would be a temporary measure but it has since emerged that it is not.”
Councillor Deere said he is now calling for all parties involved in the construction of the N5 in the Islandeady area to engage with residents.
“I am calling on representatives of the road contractors WillisBam along with members of the road resign team at the council to meet with these concerned residents to resolve these issues and bring about a resolution on this very important issues for Islandeady residents," he added.
