West on Track conference on regional development underway in Tuam

THE West on Track conference is underway in Tuam, mainly focusing on the Western Rail Corridor that links Claremorris to Galway.

Speaking at the conference, Mayo Senator Lisa Chambers said: “Fianna Fáil has always supported the reopening of the Western Rail Corridor. It’s something I have been working on for the entirety of my political career and one that I and my colleagues are deeply passionate about.

“West on track have kept the dream alive and worked consistently to keep the project at the top of the agenda. Credit to the organisers of today's conference which keeps a political focus on delivery of the project for the region.

“I’m delighted to be here with colleagues from across the western region and Minister Dara Calleary supporting this project. We in Fianna Fáil are determined to see the Western Rail Corridor reopened from Mayo to Galway.”

She added: “This project is hugely important for the economic, cultural and social development of the west. It is also interlinked with the Atlantic Economic Corridor where ultimately we want to link the west and northwest via rail to Derry.

“It is important that we have a rail connection between Mayo and Galway from a business, tourism and education perspective.

“Ballina is already the second largest freight station in the country so the opportunity to expand is huge. The demand is there, and the time is right now with the focus on climate action.

“The need for alternative travel options for people is obvious and the public demand is there. It’s crucial we deliver a reliable and regular rail service between Mayo and Galway that works for the way people live, work and socialise today.”
